Local Resources
Located in the extreme south
of Saskatchewan Regina is in the center of Canada's richest agricultural
lands. It therefore serves as the major distribution hub for
the area. Accordingly, a multitude of farm implement manufacturers
is in this area.
Numerous agriculturally related
events bring business people to Regina each year. Agribition
is the largest farm show in Canada and the fifth largest worldwide.
Mexhibition brings a wide variety of local and national companies
together to display their technology. The Farm Progress Show
showcases the latest in technology and services.
These events have pushed the
Regina exhibition facilities to the largest in the country. With
its wide diversity of accommodation, Regina attracts such events
as the provincial exhibition, the Royal Red Arabian Horse Show
and many conventions and trade shows.
Nestled amongst the farmers are
a number of potash mines. These are a fine example of the resource
diversity of the area.
Oil and gas production, which
for many years were confined to the south east, south west, and
central west areas of Saskatchewan in now finding new pools in
previously neglected areas.
Northern Saskatchewan abounds
with forest resources, which support sawmills and board plants.
Mining has been strong in this northern area for years, but new
procedures are now bringing new activity such as diamond mining.
While coal production has gone
on in the southeast area of the province for years there remains
sufficient resource to sustain this production for many years
to come.
Through its crown utility, SaskPower,
the government of Saskatchewan has created a strong electrical
supply system using thermal generation and hydro generation.
Electrical power is very attractively priced due to the efficiency
of this system. This makes the area attractive to manufacturers
such as Interprovincial Pipe and Steel, which produces steel
pipeline and other profile steel products here in Regina.
